process notes:
This Mighty Chasm, 2024
Shaya wanted to commission paintings for his office walls. There were no compositional guidelines. We started by solidifying the size that would work best for his walls, and ended up with two panels, each 40” wide and 30” tall. I began by building the panels and stretching canvas over them.
Once they were build and gessoed, they hung around the studio for a while. I wasn’t sure where to take them.
I’ve been spending a lot of time at Great Falls park, and slowly I became interested in the notion of representing the falls in some form. I began making drawings, both at the falls and upon returning to the studio.
Once enough raw materials of rock and surface accumulated, I began a long process of building the painting’s surface.
